Power BI just rolled out some fantastic updates this February, and we’ve got the highlights for you! Whether you're a seasoned Power BI user or just getting started, these updates will make your data analysis smoother, more interactive, and easier to use.
In addition to a multitude of added features aimed at improving the performance, analytics, and overall automation of Microsoft Power BI, the release is now available for February 2025. These updates will ensure you are able to collaborate, work, and gain insight from your data more effectively than ever before whether you are a finance professional, business owner, or a data analyst. Let's dive in! and take a look at what is included.
Copilot Gets Even Better: Now Available on iPads and Android Tablets!
The Copilot feature, which originally launched on Power BI mobile apps for phones, has now made its way to iPads and Android tablets— and it’s in preview!
This means we can now take your data analysis on the go, whether using a phone or tablet. But that’s not all— this month, Microsoft has given some awesome new functionality.
Previously, we could view Copilot-generated visuals but couldn’t interact with them too much— until now. Power BI has replaced the “expand view” with a brand new Explore feature. This allows you to drill down, filter, swap fields, or even change visual types, all in real-time, from both read and edit modes. It’s perfect for ad-hoc exploration.
With this update, working with Power BI on tablets will feel just as seamless and interactive as on a desktop, helping you uncover insights faster. Plus, Copilot now lets us see exactly how it came up with the answers it provided, giving you a deeper understanding of the data!
Reporting Features That Will Change the Way You Visualize Data
If you’ve been experimenting with visual calculations, you’re in for a treat! This time, Power BI introduced support for conditional formatting in visual calculations—a feature that was highly requested by the community.
Now, you can apply conditional formatting rules not only to columns and measures but also to the visual calculations themselves. This addition gives you even more control over how your visuals look, making your reports more dynamic and insightful.
When you open the conditional formatting dialog, you’ll notice a new section showing all the columns, measures, and visual calculations on your visual— even those hidden fields. It’s a small but mighty improvement that makes working with your visuals even more intuitive.
Azure Maps Visuals Now Available in Publish to Web Reports
Another exciting update comes for those using Azure Maps visuals. If you’re looking to share maps in your reports, you’ll be happy to know that Azure Maps is now supported in Publish to Web reports!
Now, there’s no need for extra steps. Simply use the regular Publish to Web option, and your Azure Maps visuals will seamlessly be included in the report. It’s a streamlined process that makes publishing maps to the web easier than ever!
Modeling Updates: Power BI Desktop and Direct Lake Mode Performance Boost
If you're a fan of modeling in Power BI, get ready for a major performance boost. Power BI has significantly improved the modeling experience when editing Direct Lake semantic models in Power BI Desktop. With the latest update, you’ll notice at least a 50% speed boost when making changes to your models.
To take advantage of this enhancement, just upgrade your Power BI Desktop to the latest version. You’ll experience quicker, more responsive changes when working with your semantic models, helping you save time and improve productivity.
Snowflake Connector Enhancements: Faster and Smoother
Power BI’s Snowflake connector, which was introduced in preview last January, has received some fantastic updates. Performance improvements and bug fixes make this connector even faster and more reliable.
If you’re using Snowflake with Power BI, make sure to upgrade to the latest version to benefit from these enhancements. You can also check out and enable preview features via the Options and Preview Feature tab in Power BI.
New Visuals to Amp Up Your Reports
Power BI just added three new visuals to enhance your reporting experience:
Drill Down Donut PRO by ZoomCharts
Heatmap by Powerviz
Maximize Data Efficiency with accoMASTERDATA writeback for Power BI
These visuals bring fresh ways to present your data, from interactive donut charts to powerful heatmaps, and a solution for more efficient data management!
Centralized Monitoring Hub for Semantic Models
Admins, this one’s for you! The Monitoring Hub for semantic models has been upgraded. Now, you can easily monitor the refresh of all your semantic models directly from the hub in Fabric.
Instead of diving into each model and workspace to check refresh statuses, everything is available in one central location. This new feature is available only to admins, so if you’re in that role, you’ll find it incredibly helpful for keeping tabs on your models’ performance.
OneLake Catalog Now Integrated in Microsoft Teams
In another step toward improving data accessibility, Power BI has integrated the OneLake catalog into the Microsoft Teams Power BI app. This new integration allows users to explore and interact with their data directly within Teams—without ever leaving the platform.
With this update, you can easily discover and take actions on your data right within the familiar Teams environment, making collaboration even more seamless.
Conclusion
Power BI is getting even more powerful with every update. As these new features roll out, they not only enhance your data analysis capabilities but also open new possibilities for collaboration and efficiency. Whether you're a business analyst, a data scientist, or a team leader, these updates will help you work smarter and uncover insights faster. Stay tuned for even more innovations as Power BI continues to evolve!
